How do i change the rear brakes on a 1996 eagl etalon?

im trying to get the brake drum off of the rear hub. after i remove the wheel is there any bolts that i need to loosen, or do i need to hit it with a rubber mallet until it slides away from the hub?How do i change the rear brakes on a 1996 eagl etalon?

the same as the front disc brakes with the exception of the parking brake spring. I can't remember if this is actually in the way of the pads or not, but if you use a brake spring remover tool it comes off easily.



Loosen the parking hand brake (inside the vehicle). Jack the vehicle up and put on supports. Remove the lug nuts and the wheels. Remove the bottom caliper guide pin from the back of the caliper. Remove the pin (leave the grease on the pin). Swing the caliper up and tie off the caliper out of the way with wire or string **DO NOT LET THE CALIPER HANG FROM THE BRAKE LINE**. If you have trouble loosening the guide pins, get a socket wrench with a longer handle for more torque.



Remove the outer shim, old brake pads and spring clips. Check the clips for damage, replace as necessary. You will now use a driver tool (MB990652)to thread the piston into the caliper. Position your driver bore over the caliper piston (the metal ring on the part you tied up) and tighten slowly as to depress this metal ring back into the caliper. Use caution and insure you are even on all sides. You will want to depress it all the way back in until it's flush with the caliper.



Now you're ready for the new pads! Put the shims (thin metal parts) back onto the new brake pads. Insert your new brake pads into those metal clips and position them against the rotor on both the front and back. Now, untie the caliper (the part you tied off earlier) and slip it back down onto the new pads. It might be a bit snug so make sure your pads are all the way in and flush with the rotors. Lubricate and re-insert the caliper guide pin back into the bottom hole. Make sure you reposition the rubber part (sleeve) that's back there as well. The guide pin needs to go through that component. Using your spring remover, put your parking brake spring back on. Put your wheels back on and your lugs (install lugs in a star fashion, never one right after the other). Remove supports and put the vehicle back down.



Start your engine and depress the brake until it is firm. You're ready to go!How do i change the rear brakes on a 1996 eagl etalon?
Try tapping in between the wheel studs with a hammer to pop the drum loose from the hub. When the drum has some play try to jiggle it off. If the drum has some play, but won't come off, then you need to back off on the adjuster (there is a small window on the back plate that is usually covered by a rubber cap). Pull the cap off and use a small flathead screwdriver to back off the adjuster. Just remember that the adjuster has left-handed threads, so you have to spin the adjuster clockwise to loosen it.
