How to convert 4 lugs to 5lugs on honda civic ex 05 coupe?

I have a honda civic 05ex coupe and I want to convert 4 lugs pattern to 5 lugs pattern. I don't know what parts should i get to do it, and I also want to change the front rotor brakes and rear brake ( my rear brakes are drum and I want to convert it into brake rotor). Can you guys help me out with this?

thankzHow to convert 4 lugs to 5lugs on honda civic ex 05 coupe?
1 get a wheelbarrow full of money! 2 If you are lucky you might find a Honda with 5 lug wheels, - you then might be able to pull hubs off and change out with stock parts! Or you might be able to buy adapters at auto parts store (or custom wheel shop)! This will cost you plenty! For non drive wheels you can change hubs, -- but you need to find one at junkyard (preferably) that has disc brakes on back and buy all the stuff needed to remove drum brakes and backing plates and install lines that go with disc brakes! Then you have problem of parking brake, which has to have all the conversion stuff to to work!

When you get finished with that, all you have to do is get master cylinder for disc brakes, (for all 4 wheels), change anti skid brake parts (if so equipped) and possibly %26quot;shuttle valve that shuts off fluid flow should one %26quot;end %26quot; of car have brake leak, and then I guess you are ready to go!

Possibly you can buy conversion kit for disc brakes at a%26quot;speed shop/custom car supply%26quot; place for somewhere around $900-1000! They also might have adapters to bolt on. but this will make your wheels sit out about 1 1/2%26quot; probably - so you might need %26quot;deep dish%26quot; wheels to go that way!

To me it would be unwarranted expense, as only about 1/3 of braking goes to rear wheels! And if you are going to %26quot;play competition%26quot; you will probably tear car up and ruin it in short order anyway!

But then what do I know!! I have only been fixing cars since I was 9,---which is almost 60 years ago!How to convert 4 lugs to 5lugs on honda civic ex 05 coupe?
The lugs are part of the %26quot;brake-rotor%26quot;How to convert 4 lugs to 5lugs on honda civic ex 05 coupe?
The lugs are mounted in the hub assembly of each wheel, the key is finding 5 lug hubs which have the same size bearing mounting shaft as the 4 lug hubs which you have. once you locate a set of the proper hubs you will have to obtain rotors to match, Brake caliper mounts to match the rotors (front and rear) which may require replacement of the knuckles in the front and will certainly require modifications to the rear spindle supports to mount the rear calipers. This is not going to be a simple swap a few pieces operation - your best bet will be to find a disk brake equipped rear %26quot;axle%26quot; assembly from a similar car so you have all the pieces in one assembly then find a really good welder who you can persuade ($$$) to perform non dot approved modifications to your machine. If you are reasonable lucky on the parts locating side of this you might get it accomplished for less than 2 or 3 thousand dollars. How to convert 4 lugs to 5lugs on honda civic ex 05 coupe?
WHY would you want to do this? It would be very expensive for no benefit whatsoever.

My brake fluid seems really dirty (dark brown). Does it need changing periodically?

The reason I looked at my brake fluid was because my brakes were a bit spongy (the pedal went all the way to the floor) the other day (they're fine now, even before I added a little brake fluid). But, when I went to add a little bit of brake fluid to bring the level to the 'maximum level' line I noticed how brown the existing brake fluid was. The new brake fluid was crystal clear. Do I need to change the brake fluid? How often is it suggested to replace the brake fluid?

Also, it was pretty hot the day my brakes went spongy. Could it be due to the brake fluid overheating and not working effectively? I have a 89' Honda Civic HB with non-power disc brakes in the front and drums in the back.My brake fluid seems really dirty (dark brown). Does it need changing periodically?
Yes, the brake fluid can need changing just like all of the fluids in your car. If the brakes were spongy you might want to check the master cylinder. If the pads are more than half worn go ahead and do a brake job changing the fluid. My brake fluid seems really dirty (dark brown). Does it need changing periodically?
you can at any time flush your brake system. this can be done with rented items from advanced auto.. or auto zone..

or from somebody like Midas or Meineke.

as far as the %26quot;spnoge%26quot; brakes that is not the fluid.. I would look more toward the master cylinder...or power booster..

you could go to one of those shops above if I remember right they give free est...

which would tell you what is wrong with the car then you can decide if you can do the work or not.. if not you know what it will cost youMy brake fluid seems really dirty (dark brown). Does it need changing periodically?
If you steped on the brake pedal and they were spongey, then were ok the next time you steped on the pedal, is a sign, your brake cylender is going bad. no idea, when it will let go totally, but when the cylender is changed, all four brakes will need to be bled off. sinse fresh brake fluid must be used, after all is said and done, all will have fresh clean brake luid once againMy brake fluid seems really dirty (dark brown). Does it need changing periodically?
The brake fluid is probably okay. sounds as if you need to have someone help you bleed the break lines; usually when the break pedal feels mushy it is a indication of air in the break lines

  • How do i know when i have to replace my rotors?

I have a Honda Civic 04 DX with Discs in the front and drums in the back. I have changed the brake pads at 60K but I want more info on RotorsHow do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
The minimum machining limits on most Japanese vehicles (at least here in Japan) is inside the rotor itself. It must be removed in order to see it. It generally will say %26quot;Min 19mm%26quot;, or something similiar.

For some reason, people think you must machine or %26quot;turn%26quot; the rotors every brake change, which is untrue. Most rotors can only handle 2-3 turnings (depending on how much material is removed), while some specify no machining at all...simply replace. They should not need it unless they have been grooved, warped, or have some condition that makes if necessary.

Vibrations while braking (usually in the brake pedal itself) can indicate rotors that are out of round, a faulty caliper, or incorrectly adjusted rear drum brake(s). (YES..loose shoes that refuse to self-adjust can give similiar symptoms)

Measurements must be made with a micrometer in several places going towards the center of the rotor if possible. (Go with the smallest reading if it varies). Never with a set of calipers, which can only measure the widest point at the outer edge. (Not accurate, as the edges can flare slightly, and rust can throw off the reading). A wrench is ok in a pinch, like looking thru a junkyard for a decent replacement (if you go that route), but keep in mind, a 19 mm wrench measures slightly over 19 mm.. (.4mm or .015 in. wider) otherwise, to get it over a 19 mm nut, it would be a press fit.

Factory replacements can run a couple hundred dollars, but I'm sure you can find a quality replacement for much cheaper. I'm not familiar with your particular model, but generally Hondas only require tire removal, then brake caliper, and finally the two machine screws which hold the rotor snugly to the spindle to replace the rotor. (Most common with smaller bodied Hondas)

Some require a puller to remove the rotor from the hub bearing (much more expensive)..but, more common with larger models (Legends and Inspires etc..)

Hope this helps...How do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
You should always change them if there are any deep grooves in them. Otherwise, use a micrometer to determine their thickness and compare it to factory specs. How do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
take one into the nearest autoparts store and have them measure is the best way. Also there is a chamfer on the egde of a rotor look for it, if you do not see the chamfer you are getting really close and definately should have them measured. How do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
well when you changed your pads you were supposed to get them machined. they will tell you what kind of condition they are in. if you did get them resurfaced and they shake and feel different you probley will need some new ones. they are not very expensive and easy to changeHow do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
You can sometimes tell when you're braking, you'll feel and hear a light thudding sound every 1-2 seconds, which indicates uneven groove and wear. They can also be too thin, but you'll need a micrometer to check for this (standard width is 19mm, I believe).

Typically, a shop will re-groove them to smooth them out, but this can only be done 1-2 times, then you have to change the rotors.

A garage will give you an inspection for a small fee ($20-50) or an auto parts store will eyeball and measure them for you if you remove the tire. Cost for new pair is $150-250, depending on where you live. To replace will cost you about the same. Good luck! How do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
The minimum service limit for those rotors is 19mm. If there is no ridge on the outside of the rotor (you should have had them machined when you replaced your pads, so there should be no ridge). Try to fit a 19mm or 3/4 inch (the standard equivalent) open end wrench over the edge of the rotor. If it fits, your rotors are too thin and need to be replaced. You do not need to replace them to get rid of a brake pulse if there is still enough material to have them machined.

How do i remove the rear drums?

I have an 01 sunfire and im needing to change the rear brakes however i cannot remove the drums. Does anyne know how to do this on this specific model? Thanks and God bless. How do i remove the rear drums?
jack rear end i would suggest jack stands , because you will have to work underneath car, there should be a plastic or rubber cap on back of hub under where brake line attaches , to wheel... you pull the caps and use a screwdriver or brake tool to loosen brake adjustersHow do i remove the rear drums?
please tell me you don't have the parking break on. beyond that they should come strait off try working them back and forthHow do i remove the rear drums?
there is a lip that holds the drum secure to the hub sometimes there are two holes on the face of the drum that you need to put a couple bolts in them they are threaded and turn them the same number of turns and they should pop loose spray the center of the drum with Pb blast or wd-40 first also a hevey hammer blow to the drum at the top will break it loose hope this helpsHow do i remove the rear drums?
after the wheel is removed a good whack with a hammer will break them looseHow do i remove the rear drums?
If the other answers fail, then apply heat to the drum around the hub. This will expand the drum and should pop off. Sometimes you still need to whack it with a hammer especially if it is pretty rusty. A propane torch for your heat source works well. A hair dryer will not work. Do not get it red hot because the heat will transfer to the hub and expand it as well. Usually about 3-5 minutes of heat works.

Unable to fit the new drums?

Today i got a new pair of AIMCO brake drums and i was trying to replace them. After setting the adjuster to lowest limit (so that its not pushing the brake shoes too far) i was able to put the passenger side drum with slight difficulty (rear wheels). But on the driver side rear wheel, Drum just refused to get in even after fully adjusting the adjuster.

Looks like it is able to slide upto halfway and after that i have to really push it hard to slide it fully. But in this position i am just unable to move the drum (looks like shoes are tightly locked with drums).

    1) Why drum is able to slide halfway on the shoes but not further? Is it a issue with the drum or the brake shoe? and how do i identify what is causing the problem?

    2) Recently i did changed the brake shoes also and i assume that there is no difference between brake shoes, i mean there is nothing like which one will be leading shoe and which one will be trailing shoe. Am i correct?Unable to fit the new drums?
check the emergency brake cable on it ,and if necessary back it off, some someone may have adjusted it up for the brake to work better, but this has to be backed off for new shoes and drums, that's probably the problem with it,the drum would fit on it either way you had the shoes on,but the little shoe goes to the front, good luck.Unable to fit the new drums?
Shoe with least amount of material should be on the front side. As for the drum, check that your emergency cable is not binding and keeping the top portion of the shoes slightly apart. You may have to back off the emergency cable.Unable to fit the new drums?
There is a difference between the Leading (front) and trailing (rear) shoe.

There have been times when I took new drums to the lathe to do a cleaning cut to get them to fit the shoes.

Another problem I have seen is that sometimes the shoes are not on the right part of the top anchor.

Too late now, but this is one reason that I only take one side apart at a time (or use a camera) and/or have the manual for the car I am working on.Unable to fit the new drums?
depending on the type car you are working on and the type brake system it has; you may have a long and short shoe, or all the same. most older cars used %26quot;self energizing %26quot; brakes which used the different lengths. most imports and newer vehicles use non self energizing systems which use equal length shoes. they are easily identified by looking at the bottom where they hook up. self energizers use the adjuster assembly to %26quot;float%26quot; the shoe set and non self energizing usually butt against a solid spacer on the bottom. if the shoes look like what was on it before, new ones should fit and accept drums easily when adjusted to the lowest setting. sounds like you have a parking brake cable that has been adjusted too tightly and is holding the shoes apart, or a frozen park brake cable or acuator that will do the same thing. check this part of the system closely and repair it as necessary and i'm betting the prob is solved. there is also the chance a wheel cylinder has stuck and is not allowing the shoes to return to full rest position, if thats the case, replace those as well to cure the fit and make a safe brake job. good luck to you and hope i've helped.

garyUnable to fit the new drums?
need to know what kind of car sounds like a dodge stratus to me they are known for the brake hoses going bad and holding pressure on the wheel cylinder so the shoes don't go in all the way.. this can also burn off the shoes in less than 3000 miles..

on some braking systems there is a short shoe and a long shoe the one with the less lining (short shoe) goes toward the front of the car..Unable to fit the new drums?
Did you turn the new drums? New drums have a protective glaze and need a %26quot;Finish Cut%26quot; befor they are installed.

95 Pontiac Grand Am Brakes. HELP!?

I need to change the rear brakes in my 95 pontiac grand am, I need to know how much of a pain it is to change the shoes and drums? Is there any special thing that need to be dune or is it a simple as the pads and shoes were on the front?95 Pontiac Grand Am Brakes. HELP!?
Do you have 4 wheel disc or rear drum brakes? If you have rear drum brakes then I would bring it to a shop and have them install new brakes.95 Pontiac Grand Am Brakes. HELP!?
If you have drum brakes, you will need special spring removal and installation tools. Pay careful attention to the order you remove the springs and the way they are facing.

Do only one side at a time so you can use the opposite side as a reference in case you forget how something was installed.

It's not a hard job, but you will need to get the right tools.

Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?

    1) My mechanic said my front brake pads are worn and need to be replaced soon. I think he said they were down to 1/32%26quot;. The quote for this job was about $180 ($50 for parts, the rest for labor). But I haven't heard any sounds from my brakes - do all cars have that %26quot;indicator%26quot; sound, or may my car not?

    2) My brakes also vibrate a bit (pedal) when at higher speeds. He said this is caused by the rear drum brakes being out of line or uneven or something - He can machine/adjust those for about $90. Is that necessary and/or reasonable?

    3) About how often would I need to change my brake pads?

I have a 99 Mazda protege and live in Denver CO , and drive about the avg amount i'd say.

ThanksDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
Mazda's have a reputation for squeaking brakes but that can also be a sign that they are going bad and need to be replaced. Get them checked before you ruin the rotor. That's expensive to replace.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
well i think you think you should get it checked out. i don't think its that big of a deal cause all cars squeak on occashionsDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
From what I've learned yesDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
yesDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
My uncle is a service manager at a high end dealer and he says that not all breaks squeak when they need replacing. If you are doubting what they told you go and get another estimate elsewhere. And yes removal of the vibration is necessary... Brakes are pretty important to me when I am flying down the road, I really don't want to take any chances of them failing... that has happened to me once and it wasn't a nice feeling.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
Brake pads need to be checked on a yearly basis. What you mechanic said is true. Even if you don't hear a sound from your brakes doesn't mean they don't need to be replaced. When you start hearing a sound it could be too late.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
They should. Honda has tabs built in so when you hear the squealing, you are not actually wearing out your brakes, you are just being warned before they becomes unsafe.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
Not all make the sound. Some brake pads have a built-in %26quot;indicator%26quot; - a piece of metal that scrapes to make a noise when your pads are worn too thin. Some don't.

1/32%26quot; is VERY thin - replace them right away.

The vibration is more likely your front discs being warped. If they will machine both the front rotors (discs) and the rear drums for $90, that's not too bad. For just the rear drums it may be a little high.

Brake pads (front wear much more) should last at least 20,000 miles, and perhaps as much as 60,000. Rear brakes will probably go 80,000.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
advise you to check some more prices. on the expensive side. vibration at different speeds can be due to warpage in the front rotors. they can be machined. can't give you an honest answer on how long since everyone drives differently. they, the brakes--especially disc--, should have a metal squeeker or squealer to let you know. 1/32 is extremely bad and needs to be fixed. on driving an average, does not indicate how you or others drag on the the brakes...amount of time and pressure on the pedal. hope this helps.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
50 dollars for parts on a 99 Protege, the same car my wife drives, is way too much. I would take it someone else and get a 2nd opinion.

The squealing sound doesn't always mean that your brakepads are wearing down. That sound can come from brake dust, heat, or even rust on the rotor. In many cases when the pad wears down to the point where it's just metal on metal contact you'll get a squealing sound, but not if there's any pad left.

After working for some time with mechanics, I can very safely tell you that there are a good 80% who are trying to rip you off. Take your car somewhere else and get the job done there.

If you're getting any kind of backfeed or pressure returned to your petal when braking you will need to get your drums adjusted. 80-90 is a fair price for that.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
Most cars have wear indicators, but some brake pad manufacturers dont put them on their pads and sometimes they break off. So, sometimes they dont squeal. $180.00 is a fair price. Vibration can be caused by drums and rotors being out of round. The test is while driving around 50, LIGHTLY apply the parking break. If the car vibrates then yes the problem is the rear brakes. Drums can be machined to repair this condition. Rotors should be replaced tho. Autozone sells inexpensive rotors and they work well. Brake pads generally need to be replaced about 40,000 miles, depending on driving habits.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
mst cars have what the call a scrapper when your pads get low it rides on the disk , the front. making a noise so you can get er done. go for the front pads first, see how it goes if the pulsation persists then go for the rear. front pads average 40 to 60 thousand rear shoes about 80 depending of course how and the condition that you driveDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
they do if they have a squeeler on them, but sometimes thats not the case, you might have brake dust, that will make them squeel too.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?
some cars do have low pad indicators some dont if ur down to 1/32 its time and for ur high speed brakeing vibratios it is either ur rotors or drums out of round or rotors warped change them not that expensive

sensor is usually on the master cylinder and is telling you you have low fluid check thatBrake light on 1983 dodge power ram 150?
An '83 Ram PU isn't going to have a low fluid level warning light. That's just the normal brake warning light, which is triggered by a sensor in your proportioning valve (a little metal block that the 2 lines from the master go into, and then 3-4 lines come out to the wheels, just below the master). It shows that there is some sort of an imbalance in pressure between the 2 brake circuits. A lot of times it will be on after a brake job because the wheel cylinders got pushed back in to make room for the new shoes. It will usually go out after you press the brake pedal a few times. If not, it could be that the proportioning valve needs to be reset, or the wheel cylinders started leaking when they were pushed in. Normally, it will come on if you have a fluid leak, air in the lines, or a bad master cylinder plunger.

    Corolla spongy brakes?

i just changed the front disc brake pads and rotors on my 2000 corolla and the mechanic said the rear drums still have 45% left on them so i didn't have the rear changed. I'm not exactly sure if this problem was present before the brake change or not but i noticed that my brake is really spongy and i have to press it about 90% down to get a good brake response and after 90% it is really stiff and makes it hard for me to judge how hard i am braking before locking the wheels. This is important cause my car lacks ABS. I have heard that changing the brake fluid and bleeding the lines helps my brakes be more sharper and less spongy but my receipt from the brake job indicates that they did change the brake fluid and did bleed the lines!? so im wondering whether i should take it to toyota instead and ask them to bleed the line and change the brake fluid or just to ask them to inspect the brakes? i know there is a 80$ diagnostic charge if no problem is found and im wondering whether i should risk it?Corolla spongy brakes?

Your best bet is to splash out and buy the piaggio/ haynes owners manual (about æ‹¢20) for that particular model, as some information on the net may not be relevant to your bike. How to inspect/change a mopeds rear brake shoes?
You have to remove the wheel to be able to remove the brake shoe carrier from the drum. You can then see the wear material on the shoes.

It may be that the cable has stretched and could need replacement.

There may be an adjuster on the end where it goes onto the lever on the brake drum ( at the wheel).

Some play is necessary - no play on a bike/scooter means that the brake can apply when going over a bump and some movement needs to happen firstly putting on the brake light switch just before applying the brake.

Whatever you do ensure proper operation of the brake light as a smack from the rear could have very serious consequences.

    Good luck

  • I need to repair the drum brakes on a 2003 Ford Taurus...?

The parts at Autozone are $34.99 for the drum, $16.99 for the shoes and $7.99 for the repair kit which contains all the springs and what not.

Besides the know-how of actually doing the work, is anything else needed? I think the are really bad so just changing the shoes won't cut it.I need to repair the drum brakes on a 2003 Ford Taurus...?
Changing brake drum shoes is a little more involved than changing disk brake pads. The biggest problem is stretching the springs back in place. They make special pliers for this, but it can be done with a couple of phillips screwdrivers. I would advise wearing goggles, also a dust mask as there will be a lot of asbestos brake dust in the drum.

Don't forget to screw back the auto adjuster bolt, or the drums won't go over the new shoes.

Be careful not to pump the brakes with the drums off, or the cups will pop out of the cylinders and make a big mess. if there is brake fluid leaking around the cylinders, it would be a good idea to change them out, however, opening the brake lines means they will have to be bled of air later.

The old drums can be %26quot;turned%26quot; on a brake lathe, if they're not too bad, costs about 7-10 each, saving 45-50 bucks. Your local auto parts store should be able to look at them and tell you if they can be turned. How do you remove the rear brake hubs on a 1989 Toyota Dyna 200 ?

I've changed the drum brakes on the front, the hub just comes off after removing wheels and 2 screws. The rear drum brakes have reached maximum adjustment and now are starting to jam on. I couldn't find a workshop manual for this vehicle and I don't want to start smacking it with the hammer and break something (probably my finger). The wheels are removed, the 6 retaining nuts are removed, do I need to use a puller or twist the bit in the centre? This is a single wheel set up, not dual wheels. Any mechanical advice much appreciated, Cheers Stu.How do you remove the rear brake hubs on a 1989 Toyota Dyna 200 ?
sounds like you may have to hammer side to side and pry side to side a little at a time, I've been there many times.

Unless there is a way to access the adjuster gear from the back...some vehicles have a rubber thing that can be removed, just don't turn it tighter. How do you remove the rear brake hubs on a 1989 Toyota Dyna 200 ?

How do I change the rear brakes on my Vespa LX150?

Whenever I use the rear brakes, they pump, rather than slow me to a stop. When I use the front brakes, it is just fine, but I don't like relying on them. It's like they're only working on one part of the drum. I don't even know if any of this makes sense. I've tried googling, and checking youtube, but I just can't find anything. Nor do I even know if the reason for this happening is because the brakes need to be changed. Please help!!How do I change the rear brakes on my Vespa LX150?

How do you change the brake pads on a 1993 Subaru Legacy, and what tools do you need?

I dont have alot of knowledge about cars, and I dont want the horror of the Just Brakes Scam... I think It would just be easier, and save me money if I do it myself...

What tools do I need? Can I use a regular jack that i would use to fix a flat tire? Do I have to use grease or anything? How do I know I put them on right... Do I have a wheel drum, or disk brakes... I Know the Mechanics look for women like me, and i just want to nip it in the butt and take care of it! Please Help..I need detailed instructions! =) Thanks,How do you change the brake pads on a 1993 Subaru Legacy, and what tools do you need?
Go to the library and look in a good auto repair manual like Chiltons. Study the part on your car's brakes and get a good understanding of how the parts relate to each other. If you are confused after that, bite the bullet and don't try to do your brakes- go to a shop. The book will tell you what to do in normal circumstances, but there is potential for many other conditions to exist. If you still want to do the job badly enough, get together with someone who has worked onbrakes and will be eble to judge what's right and what's odd and unusual. Gremlins always prey on novices.

You need a set of metric wrenches, a jack, a pair of jack stands- or at least one jack stand and a couple of wheel chocks to keep the car from rolling while jacked up, some pliers, a brake spoon or large screwdriver. When you take the wheel off you will see a brake disk or drum. Chiltons will show you what you have. Get some fresh brake fluid to use to flush and bleed the brake lines.

There shouldn't be unusual difficulty unless the brakes are worn out and have scored a drum or disk. It's easy to lie to somebody about their brakes when they have no experience. Not every shop is staffed by liars, but it is worth being a little concerned about. You can save a couple hundred bucks doing the brakes- or wind up spending that and more if you try, then mess things up.

There's really too much to say about fixing brakes to be thorough in a forum like this. How do you change the brake pads on a 1993 Subaru Legacy, and what tools do you need?
To prevent buildup of condensation in the lines and subsequent corrosion, the lines should be flushed every couple of years. Brake fluid will absorb water from the atmosphere. You'll not regret having the book- knowledge is power.

How long do brake discs last for?

If I get my brake pads changed before they wear to the brake disc, will I be ok to continue using the same brake discs?

If I removed a wheel... how exactly would I tell if a brake disc is worn? Looks like a big circular dish of silver to me.

(Mine are disc brakes not drum brakes).

Thanks. How long do brake discs last for?
You'll be fine using existing discs providing they are in a servicable condition, you would be better to have a qualified mechanic take a look, brakes are so important....

disc's can last at least three sets of pads before they need changing. i work in garage in spain over here they dont change discs until they can slice meat, it's not the best thing to do!!How long do brake discs last for?
If you change your pads before they wear down yes this will stop them damaging the disc.

If you take the wheel off your car and run your finger from the inside of the disc to the outside of the disc and feel no rdieg at the outer edge then your disc is ok. If there is a ridge at the outer edge of the disc you want to query this. If you are not that familiar yourself with brake systems most garages do a free brake inspection, they will be able to tell you if you require new discs.

A disc can also be warped, you would usually notice this by a chuffing noise when driving along, braking or a slight wabble on your steering under braking.

Hope this helpsHow long do brake discs last for?
i change my pads every 3000 miles. but you dont have to. when the pads start squeeking it means that tey are worn. if you see grooves on the discs that means that the worn pads is digging into them. How long do brake discs last for?
it all depends on how you use them really. Some people ride the brakes allot and others don't do that at all. You will be able to tell when you need new brakes and if you do need new ones you have to do both sides. There is no getting around just doing one side but you can do the front say one week and the next week doing the rear. That is if you cant pay for all four at the same time. You can call around and see who in your area can look at your brakes for fee and your router as well to see how they are and you can do this as often as you like the service is free. So have them checked ever so often its safer then just waiting tell the pads are gone and you also need to replace your router at the same time and trust me having a place do it is allot of money later. So take care of the brakes by having them checked out for free at a place near you.How long do brake discs last for?
Hi no you dont always have to change your disc's run your finger on the face of the disc starting near the middle and working to the edge if there is a bump then your discs are worn and will need either re- facing (grinding the disc flat) or replaceing, if the disc has a blue tint to it it means there has been to much heat on the disc and it needs changingHow long do brake discs last for?
Preventitive maintenace is key to avoiding break failure. If you own a car, sometimes there is a painted area of your pads that indicate you need to replace the pads or a metal prong that will make your breaks noisy when its time to replace them too. If you own a motorcycle, there is a ridge that will become thinner. You may get 75,000 miles from your discs if you change you pads often and do alot of freeway miles.

The life of the brake parts can depend on your driving style, if you are hard and late braker for example you can expect the pads to have a shorter life than if you are a smooth progressive braker.

Your discs and pads can last for years and I'm talking ten years or more, I got that out of my last car. Pads are more likely to wear out than discs. It is ok to change the pads and continue with the same discs.

Modern cars will have some sort of warning that the pads are wearing either an electronic light or just a spring arrangement that rubs on the discs and makes a noise to alert you when wear is setting in.How long do brake discs last for?
Wear on brakes varies according to the type of car and the type of driving involved. You should always change the pads before they reach the point where the metal section touches the disc. On most modern cars there is some sort of indicator, a simple one being a small metal piece which makes a noise to warn that the pads need changing. The discs usually wear at a much slower rate but need to be inspected for score lines/ridges on the shiny part of the disc. Also the part of the disc where the pads make contact will wear and this will show because it creates quite a ridge on both sides if it. Brakes are not for the unsure mechanic and I advise that you have them inspected at a local garage. If you ask them, most small garages will allow you to watch as your car is inspected. How long do brake discs last for?
when you have your brakes serviced, always have your rotors (disc) resurfaced to ensure a nice, flat surface for your new pads... a typical rotor can be resurfaced up to 3 times depending on how much it has been resurfaced... a shop will measure the rotor thickness and make sure it is safe enough to resurface, if it is not, replacement is necessary... easy way to tell if you need new rotors is to feel for deep grooves in the rotor or on the end of the rotor, if you feel a lip on the end, it is replacement timeHow long do brake discs last for?
generally the brake discs or rotors are good for two sets of brake pads. if you have any surging when you are applying your brakes the brake rotors are warped and should be replaced. also if you have any grooves or chips out of your rotors they need replaced. it is possible to resurface the rotors but the cost of new rotors has gone down so much you are better off just buying a new set if yours are worn badly. dont skimp on the brake pads the cheaper ones tend to be more metallic and can be noisy. How long do brake discs last for?
There is always a minimum disc thickness quoted ...look in hand book or ask local garage man...

  • Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?

I have a 2008 ford focus and the back drum brakes are fine but I think if I had disc brakes in the back I would be able to brake better and quicker. If it is possible to change them give me details please. And, if I need to pay a car parts person to do it how much do you think it would be?Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
You can have it done for around three grand. Rotors, pads, hoses, brake cables, abs sensors, master cylinder, proportion valve.Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
You would have to switch over to a rotor and caliper setup, so you will have to buy two rotors and two calipers plus pads and labor, the cost would vary from state to state and even city to city, but if you are stopping fine now, why change? Put your money into something else.Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
If you really wanted to enhance your braking power a lot, you'd have to get a better suspension, and sports designed front rotors. just changing the back to disc won't help as much as this cause the front brakes do most of the work. and if you make the rear brakes too aggressive, the tires will just skid.Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
You can switch them out. Disk brakes require 2psi back pressure and drum need 10psi. You will need a regulator or a new master cylinder to do it. It will not be cheap!Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
the conventional (service brake) supplies 80% of the power to the front wheels. so i dont believe swtiching to read disc will hepl you the way you think it will. switch to cross drilled or slotted rotors and creamic shoes. its cheaper and it will suprisingly decrease you stopping distanceDrum brakes to Disc Brakes?
I think it is not a good idea to exchange the brake due to these days they built with anti block brake system, it may not work right after you change it, but you still can do it by to buy the whole disc brake assembly from the dealer parts dept., make sure you have the axle brake mount with 2 bolt threaded ready for disc brake, I believe if you do it yourself with parts estimate roughly $1,500.00 and if dealer do for you is around $3,000.00Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
Yes you would get considerably more braking power. Check the internet in such places as JC Whitney. For the inexperienced or shadetree mechanic, they make a complete conversion kit that supplies everything needed part and detailed instructions to get it done.Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
Really its not worth it, you will not notice any difference if any, in stopping power, majority breaking power is in the front. The ratio is about 70% front and 30% in the back,Unless your vechicle has a heavy load in the back its pointless ,when you have more than enough braking force in the rear with drums for that compact size of a car.If it was necisary all cars would have 4 wheel disc, but its not, only the front two are required.

How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?

I recently went to a car repair shop and these are the things that they want to do with my car... get new front and rear brakes, new front rotors, service front calipers and rear drums and bleed all system. The mechanic gave me an estimate of $454 including labor and parts. Is that a good deal or does that cost too much? My car is Nissan Altima 1999.How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?
Yes you have to change your brake pad as quick as possible before it causes major damage to your metal disc. But the price what he has quoted is expansive. $ 350 should be alright for the good breaking pad including the the labor cost. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?
I would ask about the %26quot;service front calipers%26quot; part. Most new calipers are self adjusting and not serviceable. The days of rebuilding calipers are pretty much over with. Unless the caliper is frozen in the slides or leaking there isn't much to %26quot;service%26quot;. As far as the price goes I would say it sounds pretty fair. Probably about 2-2.5 hours of labor plus parts. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?
that's not a bad price for a shop to be doing the work, but the price for parts is about half that, the rest is labor. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?
Get another quote, but get it done quick or quit driving the car with bad brakes. Killing somebody because of money is just stupid. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?

How to change rear brake shoes on a 1998 camry?

i was not able to take the rear drum off...is there any trick to it...what are the steps in changing out the shoes? How to change rear brake shoes on a 1998 camry?
Yes there is a trick or several tricks.

First with the em.brake off and the car in Neutral.Take off the tire, using a large hammer smack the drum in between the lug studs several times, this works 99% of the time. Then tap on the back of the drum,be sure not to hit the backing plate and bending it.put both hands on the drum across from each other moving side to side pulling on the drum.It should come off.You must have some brake tools to remove the shoes. You buy these tool at a car parts place where you buy the brake shoes. They can show you what you need. They are not that costly.A repair manual can also be of help and you can buy that there also.Do one side first leave the other side on in case you don't remember how the shoes go on.There is a primary shoe and a secondary shoe just compare them before you remove them. One shoe is longer than the other one. That is another reason not to take both sides off you can always go look at the other side. You should take both rear drums with you and have them turned at the auto parts place.Mark the drums L and R so they go back on the same side they came off of.If you do not have them turned you may experience a pulsation when braking when finished.Check for leaks (fluid)at the brake wheel cylinders,if you have one you must rebuild them or replace them.

I would for sure get a repair book. You can get a Haynes or others that are cheap. How to change rear brake shoes on a 1998 camry?
if you look at the drum, there are two little threaded holes on the face of the drum, get 2 long bolts and screw them in there evenly. Once they touch the bottom, turn them a couple of turns each. This will 'press' the drum off the shoes/hub assembly. I don't know what the thread pitch is on Toyota's, you'll prob. just have to take a look and get a few at the hardware store.

once you get the drum off, take a picture of the brake assembly, digital would be great. this will help you when you reassemble. How to change rear brake shoes on a 1998 camry?
These folks have covered what to do if the drum is frozen on with rust, but there may be another problem. The drums may be worn down so there is a groove the shoes are riding in now. This makes the diameter of the outside of the shoes bigger than the diameter of the drum edge. You can pound all you want, but if this is the case, you won't pass that smaller diameter over a larger one.

There is a slot in the back of the brake housing. It should have a rubber plug on it. Remove it and you will see an adjustment ring with teeth on it.

You will have to turn this ring to bring the shoes closer together. I'm not sure which way to turn the ring, but you'll find out. It should turn easier when you are moving them close together.

Can disk brakes on a gas scooter/motorcycle be adjusted?

My automatic 150cc scooter has levers for front and rear (disk) brakes, and both are VERY tight with almost no give. Can this be adjusted? I've read through many manuals and researched, but everything talks about how to change the pads (or about how to adjust drum brakes) and things like that and not if the levers can be adjusted. Can disk brakes on a gas scooter/motorcycle be adjusted?
disk brakes are not adjustable, if your having trouble then I would suggest new pads or take it to a mechanic. Can disk brakes on a gas scooter/motorcycle be adjusted?
may have screw adjustment at the lever on the bars,,

if not then you can take the lever off %26amp; file a small amount off the part that pushes on the piston to give a small amount of free play..

  • 96 cavalier with bad brakes?

I have a 96 cavalier with a 2.2L. and I am having problems with the brakes! Every time I try to stop the rear brakes lock up and then the abs kicks in and the abs continues pumping till you stop. Note: It has drum brakes. I have already taken apart the rear brakes and checked them out all hardware is good, shoes are good, wheel cylinders are good, I.E. at least they are not leaking, I can't tell if they are frozen but I don't think so. I have also completely changed the brake fluid in it hoping this might help some how, but no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be?

    Thanks!!

Please serious answers only. Thanks.96 cavalier with bad brakes?
I have to go with Whoa D's answer. I'm thinking bad proportioning valve (or possibly another fault) is causing the rear wheels to lock up. When this happens your EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) is going to start seeing two different wheel speed signals coming from the wheel speed sensors. The rear wheel speed sensors will show a very low speed due to wheel lockup, and the front wheel speed sensors will still show close to actual vehicle speed. This would indicate to the EBCM that there is a wheel slip condition and trigger the EBCM to initiate an ABS stop and engage the ABS system. Just my .02, anyway.96 cavalier with bad brakes?
Ok this is straight out of my brakes class' shop manual.

    1. Failed master cylinder.

    2. Restricted brake lines preventing fluid to flow to front brakes(check your brake lines).

    3. Defective proportioning valve allowing excessive pressure to rear brakes.

    4. ABS fault

But again the most likely is a faulty proportioning valve on Drum brakes.96 cavalier with bad brakes?
1 ABS and regular brakeing system r 2 differnt things

2 after replaceing 2 wheel sensors at 125 each...I pulled the ABS fuse and put tape on the ABS lite,,,,i learned driving before ABS was invented and think its an added expense to save idiot drivers

3 ABS computer cost a lot 300 to 1200 dollars

How to remove hub from drum brakes?

i have spent the majority of today trying to change the rear shoes on my wifes peuegot 306, but havent had much luck. the hub on the drivers side came off without a problem, but the one on on the passenger side seems a bit stiff. i have tried levering it out with a screw driver, banging it with a hammer, but still it wont budge, anyone have any adeas? How to remove hub from drum brakes?
you have to back the brake shoes off from the drum, on the backside of the hub you will see 1 or 2 holes with rubber plugs in them, pull the plugs out and look in the hole and you will see a gear wheel with a rod riding on the gear, you have to push the rod out of the way and turn the gear upward and that will back the shoes away from the drum so the drum will come off.How to remove hub from drum brakes?
sometimes they will put two screws towards the center of the drum. otherwise it's just stuck keep workin it make sure the e-brake isn't onHow to remove hub from drum brakes?
Start by trying to spray some penetrating oil in around the studs to losen any rust bonds. Next step would be to use an air hammer arond between the studs, dont hit the studs. if that dont work then what may have happened is the break shoes have worn into the drum itself and have created a lip on the outside endge and the shoes are catching on it. to fix simply adjust the star wheel there should be a access hole on the bottom side of backing plate.

good luckHow to remove hub from drum brakes?
heat the centre with a blow torch then hit it very hard with a copper mallet whilst rotating the drum by hand .....usually does it....levering is not teh best way as it is more difficult to pull the thing off at an angleHow to remove hub from drum brakes?
u need to back out the brake adjuster. Ck back of the drum for peek hole and there is where you place a screw driver in the back to back out the brake adjuster.

good luckHow to remove hub from drum brakes?
hi joe..i think whats happend is the drum itself has worn to a point where the shoesare behind the lip worn into the drum and its this thats holding it in place...2 heafty screwdrivers at 9 and 3 oclock should do it-your right to smack it with a hammer--force screwdrivers and smack at the same time[not forgetting to loosen the hand brake cabble off so the shoes can move back in]...once your ready to reasemble dont forget to remove the lip on the inside of the drum with a grinder...doesnt have to be neat..this will let you adjust the shoes up before the drum goes back on...the trick is to get the shoes to just touch the serface of the drum.[if not readjust and try again--once the drom is back in place it shouldnt move freely but have a slight drag].self adjusters somtimes dont work correctally and your left with spongy brakes...hope this helps.

As your bike is of less cc(150 cc) ,it will not have much effectiveness using disc brake in rear wheel. It will take major modifications from chasis to the rear wheel assly. Also, the cost of rear wheel disc brake assly is much higher than the front brake. The total cost will be approx. 50000Rs. which is your total vehicle cost.Want to change disc brake in rear wheel for pulsar?
if u really want to put arear disc there is no modifiers out there who can do the accurate job because the disc used in ur rear wheel is a front disc most probly and there r only few disc manifacturers who produce rear disc and it is going to be expencive .advantages would be ,higher braking power ,catalist to ur speed ,but negtives u cant relay on it because the alterations are not safe enough and at the same time ur bike is brand new and this type of workes might not look good because u have to all the time adjust it and u have to do it unless u get the write settings if ur lucky enough u can get it write in the first etempt and i have one of my friend mark who does it to his new pulsar and he is facing couple of problems like if a bit of care lessness can slide ur bike at top speeds and need to be over concious and maintainence is tuf because mud flyes on to it because its write below the rear mudgur and have to clean it regularly

it got nothing to do with ur bikes performance and it not heavy so its not going to make any difference and i suggest to u that ur bike is new so first drive it for couple of months and when u get bored of it then put rear disc then there is something is different ok have nice day......Want to change disc brake in rear wheel for pulsar?

Changing brakes, but what about rotors?

tacoma with 30k on it. i can %26quot;feel%26quot; im gonna need to replace the brakes at aroudn 35k. how do i tell if i should resurface rotors? it doesnt really feel bumpy or choppy when i brake. how much should i pay to resurface my rotors? do i need to do two or 4. back are drum.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
If your back wheels have drum brakes, you won't need rotors for them.

Resurfacing rotors usually isn't worth it. Even with newer cars, new rotors can be bought for $40-50 and will include a warranty. Brakes are something I don't like to chance. It's a small investment with a large reward.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
30,000 miles on it your rotors should be fine, when using your new pads take it easy for the first 5000 miles.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
While you (or a service centre) are changing your front brake pads, check the rotor condition. If they are reasonably in good condition they will be ok. Measure the thickness of the rotor with a micrometer or caliper. They must be within the car manufacturer's specs.

After replacing the pads, %26quot;run them in%26quot; as specified by the manufacturer. This is normally a few heavy brake applications at different speeds. about 15 minutes is needed, not 5000 miles.

Change you rear brake shoes every second pad change.

Good luck.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
when ever brake pads are re-newed, rotors must be machined smooth for flush contact (sweet), now rotors should only be replaced when they are close, or exceed minimum thickness (check specs through manufacturer or ring a rotor supplier, because sometimes your local mechanic might want to do a 'swifty' e.g. he loves your cash). Do your mechanical research and save a bundle.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
you would be better to just spend the extra money and put new rotors on if needed, new will make your new brakes last longer also.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
You should resurface the rotors or replace them with some Centric Econo rotors. The new rotors may cost just a few bux more than a resurfacing and are better than most other premium brands.

I sometimes %26quot;pad slap%26quot; when I do a break job on my cars if the rotors don't have any dark blue areas. I always replace the brake hardware kits, and I never have any brake noise.

I would also inspect the rear brakes. Clean out the dust with a garden hose and then hit it with some brake parts cleaner. Pull the boots back on the wheel cylinders and make sure there isn't any brake fluid leaking. These are just dust caps. Then adjust your rear brakes and slap the tires back on using a torque wrench. Exact specifications don't matter as much as even torque

How to change rear brake pads and drums?

if you have not yet done so, investing in a haynes or clinton's manual for your specific car is a great investment. most auto parts stores carry them or you can search the internet under chiltons or haynes repair manual and the make/model of your car.

for drum brakes, chuck front wheels, loosen lug nuts both side, and jack up car. remove wheel.

the drum will have 2 machine screws holding the drum in place, remove them.

the drum should come off with a little tapping. make sure e brake is off.

you will see two shoes connected by springs and the brake cylinders. also the ebrake arrangement will be apparent.

see why the manual is handy now?

using screwdriver and pliers, dislodge the brake shoes from the cylinder to relief spring tension.

unhook the springs and remove shoes.

depending on the age of the vehicle, it may be a good time to consider replacing the cylinders.

replacement is the opposite of the above.

if the system is disc, same as above for removing the wheel.

the disc calipher will be held on to the car by a couple of bolts. remove to free calipher.

the pads can now be removed.

be sure to have either the drums or the disc resurfaced prior to re-assembly.

it is relatively easy to change either, doable for a shade tree mechanic with a manual.

many autoparts stores offer free turning with purchase of pads or shoes. buy quality pads or shoes. keep everything clean. use brake cleaner before installing brake components.

depending on manufacturer of pads/shoes there will be a short break in period. How to change rear brake pads and drums?
you need to be more clear on your question. If you have brake pads then you don't have drums you have rotors. I you have drum brakes the you have brake shoes. need to say which one it is because pads are easier then shoes

i have a Ford Galaxy ( 07 ) diesel and i have got a grinding noise from the back right wheel.....i am just trying to find out how much the garage should charge me tomorrow for this?

Any ideas? How much will i be to get my rear brakes ( Pads and Drums ) changed?
I don't think they have drums I think they have discs.

I would charge about æ‹¢120 for rear back discs and pads but as the car is so new and the grinding is only coming from one wheel then it could be okay to just change the disc on that wheel (probably bring the bill down to æ‹¢100).

This is just an estimate as it depends on the price of the parts.

At a garage you are probably looking about æ‹¢170 - æ‹¢200.

Email for more details if necessary.

    EDIT:

gav552001 - It is not always necessary to change in axle pairs as you are taught in main dealers. Upon inspection, If the good brake rotor is okay (not wore down too much %26amp; smooth) then why change it? People also have there discs reground sometimes on a machine to make it right and save money.

When I say that they would be okay to get one changed, I don't mean that, I mean after inspection. How much will i be to get my rear brakes ( Pads and Drums ) changed?
500 but idkHow much will i be to get my rear brakes ( Pads and Drums ) changed?
phone around 3 or 4 garages to get an average figure of cost. Alternatively call or go into your local accessory shop and ask them how much the drum brakes will cost, from this you can work out each mechanics labour costs. How much will i be to get my rear brakes ( Pads and Drums ) changed?
If the noise is constant it might be a wheel bearing rather than brakes.

Autodata lists rear brake pads and discs at 1hr 50 minutes labour.

Rear Discs are about æ‹¢27 Pads are æ‹¢12 without sensors and æ‹¢16 with.

Hope this helps. How much will i be to get my rear brakes ( Pads and Drums ) changed?
Hi there please ignore the one who suggests changing only one side any mechanic/technician knows that with safety critical items such as brakes, steering and suspension you change them in axle pairs, anything else is asking for trouble, as for your noise then it could be a bearing but i wouldn't expect it on an 07 plate unless the mileage is very high, as for the cost that depends on if its manufacturers parts or pattern parts such as mintex or first line and also depends upon the garage you use, im afraid that you will have to ring around but please avoid the fast fit merchants, also again check they have replaced them as a pair by asking to see the originals

    Hope that helps

Probably somewhere around $250 just for labor as most shops charge around $50 an hour for labor and it's going to be in the shop for at least that. How much would a mechanic shop charge for total brake change?
depending on if u wanted the drums and rotors turned or replaced.....the shop i worked at would have charged like this: turned with replacing pads in the front would have been 2.2 hours, turning drums and replacing shoes would have been 2.5---so 4.7 hours x 85 dollars an hour = 399.50 in labor----having them replaced would have been 1.5 x 85 and then 2.0 x 85 so that would be 297.50---thats all labor prices....so kind of expect something close to thatHow much would a mechanic shop charge for total brake change?

How do you disengage the caliper when changing the brakes and rotors on a 94 Ford Explorer?

We have the wheels off and are trying to remove the calipers and thought all we had to do was remove two bolts and the caliper would slide off, but there is some kind of %26quot;pin%26quot; holding it onto the drum. Please help -- I have to leave town today! How do you disengage the caliper when changing the brakes and rotors on a 94 Ford Explorer?
First remove the cover from the master cylinder resevoir. Then place a chisel or punch on the corner of the outside end of one pin and strike it with a hammer, moving the notch of the pin inside the groove of the caliper and knuckle. Repeat this on the opposite corner of the same pin (still on the outside), and then you should be able to slide the pin all the way out the other side. Repeat this procedure on the other pin and then you should be able to remove the caliper. Compress it with big channel lock pliers or a c clamp so that it will fit over the new pads and rotors. You may see fluid coming from the master cylinder while compressing the pistons. This is OK but try to clean it up so that it does not damage any of the parts that it touches. It is a good idea to replace the pins with new ones because sometimes they are damaged during removal or just get worn and sloppy. You don't want to take a chance of having them slide out while driving! Make sure to reinstall the master cylinder cap when you are done. Good luck! How do you disengage the caliper when changing the brakes and rotors on a 94 Ford Explorer?
Block the tires real good, then put it in neutral. How do you disengage the caliper when changing the brakes and rotors on a 94 Ford Explorer?
well, there should not be any pin holding it to the drum.

There is usually two types of breaks on these vehicles.Front disk brakes and rear drum brakes.

There was an option for this vehicle to have 4 wheel disk brakes. If you have these it should be easy.

On the brake calipers there is two bolts holding the caliper to the control arm. These are the only thing holding the caliper onto the rotor.

The thing to remember is that the brake calipers have pressure pucks in them to push the brake pads against the rotors when you apply the brakes.

Now, even though you have no one stepping on the brakes now, those pucks still are pretty tight against the rotors and makes it hard to get the calipers to slide off the rotor.

I am going to tell you a trick to help release some of that pressure so they slide off easier.

Have some one step on the brake pedal and hold it down while you release the side your working on's brake bleeder nut. (10mm nut with hole in center used to release air from the brake lines)Now, loosen it slightly while they hold down brake petal then close it after a couple seconds while they still have the brake pedal depressed. You should have had some fluid squirt out of it.What this is going to do is help release some of the pressure from them pucks and make it easier to slide caliper off rotor. The calipers slide upward to come off rotor in a complete Assembly.Repeat for all sides.

Now also, before changing the new pads and trying to slide back onto rotor, you need to depress those pucks all the way. you can use a %26quot;C%26quot; clap and put it on center of puck and twist it in slow till you see it depress all the way down.then add ne brake shoes and slide on caliper over the rotor.

Just remember to step on brakes a couple times after you complete all 4 brakes and have car back on its wheels before you start it and try to move it.Cause if you dont, you will have a few seconds with out any brakes because of depressing them pucks all the way.

Good luck, you should do fine. How do you disengage the caliper when changing the brakes and rotors on a 94 Ford Explorer?
if caliper dosn't come off easily you can carfully work a screwdriver between rotor and shoe to push plunger in a little, rotor probably has grooves, be careful not to break it

For a large 4 wheel drive off road application truck, is it better to have drum or disk brakes?

Just trying to decide if I should change over to a disk setup. I know that big industrial trucks such as dump trucks and buses use drum brakes.....and I know that most race cars use disk....for cooling purposes....but the new tundra just came out with 4 wheel disk brakes. Will it make a large difference for me to upgrade? Is it worth the upgrade? How much more useful with this be for me?For a large 4 wheel drive off road application truck, is it better to have drum or disk brakes?
The front brakes do 70% of the vehicle's braking. Disc brakes provide more stopping power than drums, which is why you typically see front disc and rear drums. For normal driving, you do not need rear discs because that much stopping force in the rear of the vehicle is not necessary. Discs do have some advantages over drums however, especially for the offroad driving you are talking about. Drum brakes will collect mud and debris in them and it will get between the drum and shoe, severely decreasing the stopping power in the rear. Also, after a day's offroading, water that gets caught in the drum can cause rust (especially if you don't let it sit for a day or two) and can make the shoe stick to the drum and can be difficult to break loose. If you have a big heavy truck that you drive a lot, including a lot of offroading, discs are a good idea. If you do go to a rear disc setup, I suggest you use a proportioning valve for the rear so that you can reduce the fluid pressure to the rear. If you have equal brake pressure to the front and rear discs, the rears will lockup and you'll lose control. Plumb an adjustable proportioning valve into your rear setup and you'll have no problems.

(Dump trucks and buses can use drum brakes because the drums are much larger and have proportionally more friction material than regular car drums do. These larger commercial vehicles use an air actuated system instead of a hydraulic [fluid] system.) Hope this helps. For a large 4 wheel drive off road application truck, is it better to have drum or disk brakes?
Disk are much cheaper to make and it's a selling point, however only 10% or less of breaking is done with the rears unless your drifting, so if really makes no differance although all the heavy duty axils come with drum and if your off roading braking is the least of your worriesFor a large 4 wheel drive off road application truck, is it better to have drum or disk brakes?
disk all the way...drums were great when they were invented..in the early 1900s but why would anyone want them now? it will cost 1000 to 2000 to switch...trade for the truck u want...

    Changing brakes on a 1996 nissan 200sx?

This is the first time since I've owned this car that I'm changing the rear brakes on this car. They are drum, which involves the springs etc., how difficult is this job really going to be for me., what special tools might I need to get this job done before the workweek starts again.Changing brakes on a 1996 nissan 200sx?
The drums are not too bad. Get a good pair of pliers or Vice grips to make this job easy.

I would recommend you go to youtube.com and watch someone do rear brakes. The hardest parts are putting the e-brake back on the new shoes. Since they have retaining ring clip. The second hard part is the springs. Vice grips works very well compared to using pliers or channel locking pliers.

Some people have a hard time doing this. But once you do it they are all about the same. Now some cars do not have springs but have this bent rod shaped like a horse shoe that pulls the shoes back to place and only have 2 springs with nail like piece and a twist lock cap.Changing brakes on a 1996 nissan 200sx?

some brake drums will come off easily by just wiggling it and some of them you have to loosen the adjuster or tapping it with a hammer at the sides.good luckHow do i remove rear brake drum?
porkchop its pretty easy on that car model. make sure you dont have the emergency brake pulled 1st, there is a possability you might need to back the brake pads off iff they are too deep in the drum likely not. using a block of wood and a hammer wrap the side of the drum in aprx 3 spots. the wood is to shield the impact to the drum. the drum will likely pop free and be easily slid off. a shot of wd40 around the round center will help a lot. be carefull and wear a dust mask when you do this as brake dust will fly around.

Just recently my car brakes started to squeak. Ive had those brakes for about a year and six months. I dont know if the brakes have dust in them, i dont know. It only squeaks when i slightly press the brake, when i press it all the way its all good. If i do need this brake change how difficult is it to do it your self, i have never changed brakes my self, but i did rebuild a top end of a AMC and made it run again. I have front disk brakes and drums in the back. what kind of brake pads should i get, cause iam getting them from auto zone, and the prices very bettween diffrent brands, $35 is the most ill pay for a pair of brake pads. so which ones should i get, what do i need to keep in mind. thank you for all your helpI think i need a brake change please help.?
OK it sounds like it's about time, dust is a factor but after 20 months it's time. %26quot;Bendix or Raybestes%26quot; are your best bet and you may get another 16 to 20 months. With the rotors and drums if you run a finger nail across the surface and it gets caught or really feels rough they need to be turned, turning the drums and rotors will make the brake shoes and pads last longer. Yes get the %26quot;Auto Repair Manual%26quot; for your car to help you with the job the first time or 2. Good Luck and take it slow the first time or 2.I think i need a brake change please help.?

You get what you pay for, get the cheap ones and they blow out black dust and squeal like a retarded pig..... get the better pads, ceramic are the best. They are easy to change, you will need to buy a C-clamp to push the piston back in the caliper for the disc brakes.I think i need a brake change please help.?
You do not know what the problem is and do not know how to do it. Yet you want to fix it your self for $35. I am glad I do not live in Long Beach.

Hey: We mechanic need to make a living too.I think i need a brake change please help.?
Well for starters you get what you pay for. Pads will range anywhere from 6.00 to 60.00. They have the regular elcheapo and then they have extreme duty. You asked a question that leaves a lot of questions open. You need to go somewhere and get a free brake check. There are a number of things that could be making the pads squeak besides actually needing to replace them. You mentioned dust that is one thing. Stuck caliper will give that effect also. Dry slides. Broken anti squeaker. I have even had a bad hose cause that effect. How old is the car.I think i need a brake change please help.?
Yeah, you can do it ,but you might want to buy a Haynes repair manual for your car. It will tell you what, if any ,special tools you will need.

Get the middle priced set of pads and be sure to apply the anti squeal paste or the plastic shims that come with them.

DON'T use a bumper jack or the jack that came with your car unless you place it on stands . Be safe, don't get under ANY car if it's not on stands.I think i need a brake change please help.?
It depends, how hard are you on your breaks? If you ease into everything, they may just be glazed over. If this is the problem, a spin on a grinding wheel should do the trick. As for difficulty, disc breaks are easier to change and drums are a little more complicated.I think i need a brake change please help.?
get semi -metallic pads and shoes about 20.00 ea set The sound you hear by that description is that of the early warning device on the pads to tell you that the pads are ready to be changed-- its a piece of metal that makes a noise because it touches the rotor first when the pads are worn. as for the work it is fair but the trick is that you need some specialty tools ie brake spring pliers, brake spoon, hex or torques wrench/socket 6%26quot; c-clamp and you have to run the rotors and drums down some where to get them cut in the back take both drums off but only change one set of shoes at a time so you can look at the other side if you get lost If you have abs most of them dont like having the fluid pushed back into the master cylinder so you have to clamp the line open the bleeder screw to push the caliper back if you do it yourself get a book hope this helps

    Need a little help?

i know how to change brake pads but i never seen any brake drums before, can i change drums and turn the rotors at home or should i leave that up to the mechanics?Need a little help?
Buy a chiltons manual for your car, a set of brake spring pliers and a shoe retainer tool. It's a piece of cake. Only do one side at a time so you'll have the otherside to refer too.Need a little help?
if your not sure about brakes you should leave it to a proffesional. if they fail...... your screwed!!Need a little help?
Turning rotors requires a metal lathe. I don't think you have one at home. If you do go for it! With someone to help who has done it, it is easy. Especially on an automatic machine.

Anyway, drum breaks are a nightmare. Springs flying everywhere. It is kind of dangerous work. Not to mention, it is absolutely filthy work. I would swap the front pads and rotors yourself and bring it somewhere to have the drums done.

Also, you need a few special tools to pull, remove and replace the springs in a drum setup.Need a little help?
If you have even minimal mechanical skills you will have no problem. Take one side apart at a time in case you get confused on how the springs go back on, that way you will have a reference. Most auto parts stores sell brake spring tools...get some they shouldn't be over $25 and it will make it a lot easier than trying to use pliers or vice grips.Block the wheels on the opposite end of the car, jack the back (or front) or the car up ,use jack stands, remove the drums and clean everything with a brake cleaner. Do the one side, leave the drum off, do the other side. Take the drums to a shop and get them %26quot;turned%26quot;.You will probably have to adjust the brakes after you put everything back together, the access hole is usually on the back of the shield (you may have to knock out the plug) It also might not be a bad idea to mark the drums..left or right. Get a shop manual for your vehicle..it is probably the most important single investment you can make if you are going to do repairs yourself. I am glad to see that some people still have the skills and desire to do things for themselves. Not only do you save loads of money, you also get the satisfaction of doing something your self and you learn more about your vehicle. Save lots of money, have fun and be careful.....safety first.

Old Man Dirt has given you the best info.

If the brakes are manual brakes, no booster, they are going to feel hard and if you've never driven non-power brakes they are going to feel like they are not working.

A complete adjustment and bleeding of the system would probably be a good idea, the order would be RR, LR, RF, LF, always start at the wheel farthest from the master cylinder when you bleed brakes. Be sure and keep the master cylinder full as you bleed the brakes. Bleeders at the wheel cylinder will break off so be prepared for that possibility, nothing you've done wrong, they're just old and rusty.I got a 65 dodge coronet with drum brakes ..notice i was having to apply alot of pressure?
Do you feel like the brakes are working better after you pump them a few times. If so the brakes need bleed. If the car has power brakes, then the boost cylinder may be shot or not hooked up. A quick test for this is to depress the brakes firmly, start the engine. The brake pedal should move towards the floor. If not, then suspect the boost system. This consists of a booster on the master, a vacuum canister and tubing to connect the system to the intake manifold. So, not only can the booster fail, but the lines can rot, the canister rust out, but the engine may not be pulling a vacuum.

Make sure the drum brakes are adjusted right, there should be a slight resistance felt as the wheel is turned.

Bleeding the brakes requires a bleeder wrench, a piece of hose, a container, spare brake fluid and two people unless a one man bleeder is use. One person holds the pedal down while the other opens the bleeder and closes it, at which time the person holding the brake down releases it and depresses it again. This precess goes on until the air is out of the line. The hose is placed on the bleeder nipple and inserted into the container (partly filled with brake fluid) so that it can be determined if air is still coming out of the system. start with the brake farthest from the master. Speed bleeders have a check valve in them so opening and closing the bleeder is not needed and one person can do the job.

Care must be taken to keep the brake system with spare fluid at all times and also to keep the fluid off of paint.I got a 65 dodge coronet with drum brakes ..notice i was having to apply alot of pressure?
That's an old model and you have to be careful loosening the bleeder screws, they will break off very easily. If they do you will need to replace cylinder on rear calipers on the front. This can run into some money. If they do break its possible to get them out with an %26quot;easy out%26quot; Your auto parts person should know what size you need. Before starting to remove the bleeders make sure you use liquid wrench. The cylinders are about ten dollars each the calipers are more but, they break less often. Be careful. If you don't know how to bleed them you might want to get help. If not done properly, you could get into an accident. It's not a job you want to do half a**ed.I got a 65 dodge coronet with drum brakes ..notice i was having to apply alot of pressure?
You may bleed the brakes till you are blue in the face and it may not work...If they are power assist drums you may have other issues...Your booster may be bad...My 67 plymouth had power 4 wheel drum brakes...The booster was bad...It cost about 300.00 to have the booster rebuilt...I just went for a complete disc brake conversion and cured all my problems...There is a company called just suspension..they have come out with a big bore master cylinder..You can run your brakes with no booster...I got a 65 dodge coronet with drum brakes ..notice i was having to apply alot of pressure?
It's best done with two people. Most repair manuals should have a section on this. If bleeding the the brakes doesn't work, I would suggest looking at replacing the master cylinder. And if you actually have a power booster I would also check that.I got a 65 dodge coronet with drum brakes ..notice i was having to apply alot of pressure?

I want to change the brakes, on my 1972 dodge d200 4x4 truck (locking hubs), but i cannot get the front brake drum off. The chilton manual has a vague description which deals with removing some bearing first before the drum can be removed. Anybody know how this is done? How to remove front brake drum from 1972 dodge d200?
I know I had to use a 3 jaw puller when I pulled off drums, but don't ever remember working on a 4x4 that year.

Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?

    I have a 97 honda civic so I know it's pretty simple. I think they're drum brakes, but I haven't actually checked.

I'm mechanically inclined, and there are ton's of %26quot;how to's%26quot; on line, but what I'm wondering is if it's generally unsafe to do this yourself?

Is it something I should let a mechanic handle? Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?
In general, this is a pretty simple task to accomplish yourself. That said, it's not something that you can zip through in 15 minutes. Especially if you've never done it before. As long as you have all the info on the correct procedure, know what parts and tools you'll need, and have the time to do it right there's no reason to be concerned about changing your own brakes. Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?
It is perfectly safe and simple. For disc brakes anyways because I have not done drums. Most small cars are discs in front drums on back and you do the fronts 5X as often as the backs. Bigger or more xpensive vehicles generally have all disc brakes. Have fun.Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?
i have done all my cars for the last 10 years.... disk brakes are easier than drums though.... Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?
you can do it yourself, i do.it,s not that hard to do. you just have to know what to do.Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?
front is not drums, they are disc. rear is drums. pads go on a rotor, or disc brakes, shoes go in a drum. pads are easy, shoes, not so much.

buy a mid-grade pad, get some brake silencer, or brake quiet, to put on the backside of the pads..... damper for vibration. 1 hr tops if you don't know what you're doing. Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?
its safe and easy.Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?
You can do it yourself easy. Jack up the car and put axle stands under it. Remove both rear drums. Strip one side down ready for new parts then reassemble using the other side as a reference. Easy really. Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?
